Problem Drinking and Related Factors among Adults in Korea

Abstract

This study aims to describe drinking behaviors and to identify factors correlated with problem drinking among adults in Korea based on a nationwide representative sample of the 1998 National Survey on Health and Nutrition of Korea. Adults of aged 20 and over(N=10,773) were used for this study.
Major findings were as follows. About 13.1% of the respondent was identified as problem drinker. The percentage of problem drinking was high(26.9%) among male respondents aged 40-64 year, while for female respondents, the percentage was high(4.5%) among respondents aged 20-39 years. The problem drinking was highly correlated with depress, stress, smoking, and drinking behavior related factor such as frequency of drinking, amount of drinking and age at first drinking.
